That is so awesome! You don't really get to see a snowy graveyard in any games that I can think of. Actually, I've noticed gothic horror isn't normally seen with a snowy setting. Great work so far, though I also agree with Dan's friend about the run being a bit too strange, though Dan did always run rather strange. Also, I must mention that the upper body of Dan when he walks is a bit too stiff, with his arms too straight. This looks amazing so far though, and I am extremely excited to see where this project goes!
Also, just wondering, will the hilltop mausoleum appear? I must say, I would love to see it again! I also must mention how awesome a completely frozen Lake level would be. Sorry to throw so much stuff on you, but I'm sort of letting out years of pondering what might have been in the original Medievil.

oh, I just thought of a really cool Idea! It could be used in/at the end of a Frozen lake level live flynn60 said, but what if a boss was an Ice Dragon (a dragon actually made of ice that breathes it too)! That would be awesome!

It'll have to be decided if the gate that leads beyond the graveyard will be open or not. That could also decide if going to the mausoleum is important. Or perhaps Daniel would just leave the graveyard and later find out he must go into the mausoleum, because a key object is located there. We also have to remember that the Stained Glass Demon was killed in the first installment, thus it would be a bossfight-less level or a new boss would have to be there. I think a bossfight on the lake would be rather cool. Of course those levels aren't the main concern now.

The snowy graveyard makes me think... if all Gallowmere si stuck in a permanent winter, this means that many animals are starving, especially predatory ones like wolves and bears, driven insane by hunger to the point that they'll attack anything moving for trying to fill their stomachs... I guess Dan might fall on the list.

That's good thinking, Kaori. Adds some more enemies to the list. Perhaps a Dragon bird boss fight in the Enchanted Forest?

All sounds good to me, and I love the idea of being chased down a frozen river with a dragon flying low to the ground melting the ice behind you, so you have to keep your speed up too avoid drowning and then other obstacles to jump over, a bit like this level in crash bandicoot
but the floor behind you would be melting, I also really loved Dan's suit in ME2 so my plan is to have a point in the story where in a cutscene across a misty river, lake something like that you see the silhouette of dan landing in the time machine and then dissapearing again then when back to gameplay you hop on frozen coffins, that you can only stay on for a certain amount of time before you become encased in ice and then at the other side of the river find the cane and the suit from ME2.

I loved those levels in the Crash games! Also, by 'suit', do you mean the golden armor?

No I mean this

Why would he wear that instead of his armour? I don't really see the point. I think you should make it optional. I really see no logical explanation as to why would Daniel wear this. In MediEvil 2 he needed the outfit to be allowed entrance into the bar. Also, how would the suit end up there? The cane stick would make sense, Daniel had it until the end, but he only had that suit during the city level. Then the Dan's merged. POOF! Golden armour. The suit dissappeared. Good luck getting that in-game with story. Optional would be more aproppriate in my opinion.

Perhaps it'd work as an unlockable, like say you did something gentlemanly, went thorugh a whole level without killing innocent, similar to the sleeping village level, and so as a reward you can have a new costume, you could then choose whatever outfit you want, these outfits could include -Gentleman's Suit -Golden Armour -Dragon Armour -Dankenstein -Zarok Costume (like a halloween costume with a mask and eyeholes) to wear. So a semi-customizable Dan. Thoughts? Oh and here's some progress on the graveyard, looking more as I envisaged now oh and the purple flat surfaces are place-holders for fence and gates

Yay fences and gate all done , and the great thing about the fences are they are 2 variations tiled but I can't even tell , however it's things like that that make load times and game size a lot smaller Damnit Double post :S

That's what I had in mind. You could even give them some extra advantages and disadvantages. Genleman Suit - Don't know. Golden Armour - Extra protection, like in MediEvil 2 Dragon Armour - Invulnerability to fire, can breath fire and more vulnerable to ice. Dankenstein - Can't use weapons, deals great damage. Zarok Costume - Infinite usage of magic (Lightning Bolt) Will you be making a mullock king outfit, too? You don't have to, I just love that one. The graveyard looks great!

yeah I don't see why it couldn't be there along with a great pumpkin themed costume inspired by my own Dan Fortesque pumpkin that I carved today . I envisage a red dead redemption like costume mechanic, ie you need to do 5 things to earn each costume, some are finding a scrap of clothing hidden in a level, others like killing 50 zombies with your arm alone or getting through the graveyard without harming a single zombie, you get the picture. I'm also adding animated stuff to the levels too, a raven here and a spider there to help bring things to life.

Are you going to use any time travel related things? I must say it would be kinda awesome to see Dan go into the far future and get a huge laser sword or something. I also kind of think it would be cool to have a costume for Dan that is somewhat like the one in Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. I've heard that Medievil was partially inspired by that game, and I really liked it a lot. It would definitely be hilarious to see Dan running around in his underwear fighting zombies like in Ghouls n' Ghosts.
I am just throwing out some idea's of things that I think would be interesting to see. I have no idea how difficult it is to make alternate costumes and such, but it is so interesting to see this project being made. Great job on the beginning of the snowy graveyard!

I think those would be a cool idea, but better for something special thats unlocked after beating the game. it just seems too out there for the main story. I like the costumes with abilities idea. Not too excited about the chase levels, as I always thought they we annoying and frustrating in crash, but thats just my opinion. I also like the costumes with bonuses idea.
Since no one commented on it, I'll say it again "Ice Dragon Boss (thats actually made of ice)!!!!"

Time Travel would be kind of interesting, but would have to be implemented well into the story. A costume of Dan fighting in his underwear is a cool idea. The Ice Dragon boss could be the dragon chasing you. The river could lead into a lake, where the chase would stop. Zarok would be somewhere in the scene and he'd transform the dragon into an ice dragon. Or the Dragon would fly away after the chase. Then, after Daniel reaches Mellowmede, he would appear again, totally made of ice and breathing it. Perhaps Zarok could make an appearance here, so it would be explained.

sounds logical, but I really don't think time travel is a viable part of the story, I know Zarok dabbled in it a little and it was a big part of ME2 but i wanna stick to MediEvil time as much as possible, having said that thee may be one or 2 time travel elements. As for the underwear idea that would mean modelling an entire skeleton for dan which I may do but it won't be the first costume done for sure

I don't know how Dan would manage to travel in time, but I'd like to see him go into the past rather than future. The costumes are secondary. You should concetrate on levels right now.

Of course but talking through all these ideas really helps keep me motivated and not feel I am the only one who still loves the series , as for the levels finished the start of the graveyard, snow-capped everything and added gravestones as well as optimizing a few things, gunna start blocking out what the whole level should look like soon here's a quick progress shot (ignore the weird lines around gravestones they are a render error and won't show up in the game) Oh and if any of you guys fancy yourself as level designers feel free to do some concept or layout designs of level's you'd like to see and post 'em here (they may become fully fledge levels in the game, with your name in the credits as well )

Beautiful. Might I suggest some wooden crosses as well? They were in the original, thought I would mention it. Concept art? Hm... I'm not very good at drawing, but I might attempt something. I thought I'd ask...Will we see the return of a map screen? Or will there be some kind of different way to access levels?

|
Post by rawtalent on Oct 31, 2010 18:20:09 GMT
Yeah the map screen should appear again, although that'd be done as a last thought as I have no idea of half the levels that will feature, and to aid the process of the snowy graveyard being as close to the original as possible has anyone got a birds eye view of the whole level, drawn or otherwise?

Post by Dan's Friend on Oct 31, 2010 18:30:02 GMT
There's a bird's eye view, but it only shows the locations of treasures, health fountains, etc. www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197892-medievil/faqs/46135I doubt it will be helpful, but it's the only one I found. Once I get a computer, I'll capture some shots and post 'em here. Not a bird's eye view, but from around the level.

That sort helps and I got the old epsxe running but i really needed the pathway and stuff, nevermind I'll struggle on , I seem to remember a free cam being mentioned at one point would that be accesable via the super cheat dev menu?

Yes. Use the Super Cheat Menu code. Then there should be a tab named 'cameras'. Select plugin 8 and there you go! The free camera.

Okay, here's a time travel Idea: at some point after one of the levels, a dragon chases dan (it could be made to look exactly like the one from the original dragon chase level, which was very chubby and silly looking). He gets chased to a lake where zarok is (he could be standing on a cliff over looking the whole lake). the dragon slides out onto the ice (this is were some humor could be added with the dragon looking scared and trying not to slide around or break the ice). the ice starts to crack, then stops, showing dan slowly backing away from the cracks. The dragon, seeing the cracks have stoped, smiles then moves tword dan. It stops and frowns as the Ice begins to crack again, then stops. They stare at each other for a while, then dan slimes, rushes forward and stabs his sword into one of the cracks and pulls the sword back to make it worse. He then rushes away as the ice crack gets bigger. we see the dragon make a funny scared face and an "uh oh!" sound, then fall in to the freezing water as half of the ice on the lake cracks and falls in. Dan turns around and sees zarok, giving him a triumphant smile. Zarok, in a fit of rage, casts a spell that reserects the dragon, making him stronger, meaner (as opposed to the more comical on he was before) and made entirely out of ice (and able to breath it instead of fire). It comes up and re-freezes the ice. a magic sheild surrounds the lake to keep dan from running away as zarok leaves to return to his hideout/base. After the battle, dan follows zaroks magic trail back to his base. this could be its own level. At the end of it, dan could see zarok jump into a portal that leads back in time. It's zaroks plan to keep dan from dieing, so that when he casts the spell from the first game, there's no undead dan to ruin his plans. This could be a series of funny events showing human dan (which you could use clever camera angles to avoid seeing his face) constantly comeing inches from death as zarok (operating from the sidelines away from eveyones view) has to repeatedly save his (multiple times after the inital arrow fire that originally killed dan. I think it would be funny to see zarok sighing and shaking his head, saying something about how redicuously clumsy human dan is and how its amazing that his skeletal self actually beat him). This could be an other level in which dan most find his human self and make sure he dies, while battling the past zaroks undead army and avoiding the human soldiers (whom killing would keep you from getting the chalice like in the original). This level could end with human dan leaving the battle field (zarok loosing track of him in the chaos of the battle) and heading into a cave (where he either thinks the past zarok is, or hides from the battle, depending on wheither or not you want human dan to be a coward or hero). This could turn into a boss battle where Dan (you) has to fight his human self. Zarok (the present one) arrives too late, just as dan kills his human self. a portal opens and the two are sucked through and thrown back to their own time (either in the same place, or at two different places, depening on weither you want the game to end there or not).
this allows for some funny moments (we could hear some ammusing dialog if the two zaroks meet, or when the dans meet), and an interesting story that fits in the series. this could also be in the middle of the game (as I personally don't like this as an ending). So what do all of you think?
Ps.I almost forgot, but I think it would also be cool to see the return trip get messed up and send them so far in the future that it would be after the apocalypse. I think it would be cool to see a world like in the alternate ending of Army of darkness (if you want, I'll post a vid, I cant now cus I have class to go to). MAYBE the rest of the game could be them working together to get back, fighting some really cool looking mosters. maybe zarok could find out that someone crazyer than him found remnats of his spell book and caused it all, and in the end (when they get back to their own time) decides to become good and use his magic to help people (this also allows for some funny "zombies helping people (like mowing lawns and gardening) scenes at the end).
Finnaly, please dont have people in the halls of heros give you stuff that isn't weapons, and have more variety. I always hated getting gold (which I rarely used) or life vials and felt ripped off. Thanks for reading (even though I went on for ever) what do you guys think?

Post by Dan's Friend on Nov 1, 2010 15:18:24 GMT
I like the whole idea about the dragon. I don't see why would Daniel want to kill himself. If I was Dan, I'd concetrate on killing the past Zarok. That way, MediEvil would never take place. Maybe I just fail to see your point of view on this. If there was a past level, I wouldn't put a chalice into it. It'd require a completely different Hall of heroes, since some heroes died after Dan. I think it would be interesting to see a two on two fight: Present and past Zarok against alive and dead Dan. It'd be interesting if you could rewrite history and stuff. I wouldn't go the way of Zarok becoming good. If they were sent into an apocalyptic future, I think he'd have to cooperate with Dan, but as soon as the villain would fall, he would be after his selfish goal of ruling everything again. Also, there's something of a plot hole with Daniel rising. Heroes in MediEvil weren't brought back to life. If Daniel became a hero, would he rise from the dead? Would his soul be summoned onto earth rather than remaining in the hall of heroes? That's why I was thinking that perhaps Daniel was no longer a coward after the first game. Seeing that Zarok (or the demon within him) is causing chaos, he decides he will leave the hall of heroes, to save Gallowmere once more. The heroes warn him that if one is to leave the hall, he cannot return again. Daniel, however doesn't wish such evil to rule over the world and descends onto earth to batlte Zarok once more. This would also explain why he rose from the dead in MediEvil 2. I think it would be pretty cool if Daniel couldn't beat Zarok alone and in the end and the Heroes from the hall would come to support him in a final epic battle. Just ideas and suggestions, of course.
