I am unsure why in the JP version Dan's mug is under his helmet. I'm not sure if it's one of those utterly unexplainable graphical edits more common to the time or if there is a rating/censorship issue that accounts for it. I have yet to see if his head is covered for the duration of the game, but it's interesting to see nonetheless.
Personally, I like him better without it. If I find any other odd changes in the Japanese version, I shall promptly report.
It could be. There's always culture differences. Maybe it's because Dan's the hero. Still an odd choice given the game is full of the undead. The player opened their menu all the way finally, and the helmet appears beside Dan's arm as a selectable item (I haven't seen it actually selected, though). Perhaps it's removable?
Oh, and much like the cover art, Dan's pupil appears -much- larger in the cutscenes than in the American and European versions. Also, poor Dan doesn't have any subtitles to his mumbling. Zarok's voice has a rather spooky echo filter on it.
Well, I did not think about that. I think it is because Daniel does not have a lower jaw, after all. It might freak out some people. It would not be the first game to be banned for characters missing a body part. Like, Fat Princess. I heard it was banned, because the characters have four fingers!

My cute little Japanese loving friend (and she really is cute, trust me) tells me that it looks like a Samurai helmet, and so might have been specific for the Japanese, and that anyone out of Japan wouldn't have known the significance of the helmet itself (Samarai are incredibly important to Japanese culture) so they left it out.

I order video game stuff from Japan a lot. I no longer suffer shipping shock. And it's actually never been too outrageous. In fact, calculated out, it's not bad at all.
Also, about the footage, the LP I am watching is on NicoNico, that Japanese video site. You can't watch anything without an account, but if you can wade through a foreign language log-in page, here: www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/9534187
